At the end of 1977, the Government decided to built a toll expressway from the north to the south of the peninsula, linking all the major towns and developing areas of the west coast. It starts from Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah near the border of Thailand, in the north and ends at Johor Bahru, Johor, near the border of Singapore.
The main objectives of the construction of the expressway are to create a complete and effective road network between all major towns and cities to cater for the increasing traffic.
