A manned mission to Mars has not taken place but is the subject of science fiction, engineering, and scientific proposals and plans throughout the 20th Century and into the 21st Century. A human mission to visit, land on, and eventually settle the planet Mars and/or its moons, Phobos & Deimos, has long been a subject for science fiction writers, political debate, scientific analysis, engineering plans, and a dream of space exploration advocates. Though various mission proposals have been put forth by multiple organizations and space agencies, the logistical and financial obstacles are considerable. Regardless, preliminary work for missions has been undertaken since the 1950s, but with planned missions typically taking place 10-30 years in the future.
