A human mission to visit, land on, and eventually settle the planet Mars and/or its moons, Phobos & Deimos, has long been a subject for science fiction writers, political debate, scientific analysis, engineering plans, and a dream of space exploration advocates. Though various mission proposals have been put forth by multiple organizations and space agencies, the logistical and financial obstacles are considerable. Regardless, preliminary work for missions has been undertaken since the 1950s, but with planned missions typically taking place 10-30 years in the future. See List of manned mars mission plans in the 20th century for many past proposals.
