After a college career at Temple University, he was drafted in the second round (37th overall) of the 1997 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors; however he did not commence play with them until 2000. Fearing that they would lose out as there was no guarantee he would sign a second contract with them, the Warriors traded Jackson to the Minnesota Timberwolves before the trade deadline in February 2002, where he played for 1½ seasons.
In 2003, he signed with the Philadelphia 76ers. They traded him to the New Jersey Nets during the 2005 off season, after a deal to bring in Shareef Abdur-Rahim from the Portland Trail Blazers to the Nets fell through.
