Marion County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of July 2008 its population was estimated at 880,380 making it the largest county in the state and 55th most populated county in the country, greater than the population of six states. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 403 square miles (1,044 km²), of which 396 square miles (1,026 km²) is land and 7 square miles (18 km²) (1.68%) is water.
*Currently ends in Indianapolis at current Interstate 465 / Indiana 37 exit.
Expansion connecting Indianapolis and Evansville is expected to be complete around 2018.
Marion County was created in April 1, 1822 and was formed from Delaware New Purchase. It is named for Francis Marion, a Brigadier General from South Carolina in the American Revolutionary War.
