Though Mrs. Coulter seems very charming, it is quickly revealed that she has a darker and evil, sinister side and is wont to manipulate her lover, Lord Asriel, and his daughter, Lyra. Her dæmon (the animal manifestation of her inner self) is a golden furred and black-faced monkey with a cruel streak. He is called Ozymandias but people think he is called Ozzy.
Mrs. Coulter heads a particular Church faction known as the General Oblation Board (also known as "The Gobblers" among the Gyptians and street urchins). Under Mrs. Coulter's guidance, the Oblation Board has been secretly kidnapping children to use as "lab rats" for experiments at their laboratory in Bolvangar.
