He began skateboarding at the age of 16 and grew up skating Hamilton's Beasley Bowl (a park that Mark was so fond of he recently had its name tattoed on his leg). Appleyard also eventually started hitting the streets of Toronto. He also attended Lord Elgin High School in Burlington and is still a role model to many locals.

-Mark also has a skate park named after him in the Cayman Islands, when he bumped into a architect building a skate park for his son. Mark gave him a couple pointers.
