Csokas was born in Invercargill, New Zealand. His mother, a nurse, is of Irish and Danish descent, and his Hungarian-born father, also named Márton Csókás, worked as a mechanical engineer. Csokas attended King's College, Auckland, and graduated from Toi Whakaari, The New Zealand Drama School in 1989.
