She played Annie Glenn, the wife of John (who was played by Ed Harris) in the movie adaptation of The Right Stuff. Her husband, Caleb Deschanel was the film's cinematographer. She also played Doc Hayward's wife Eileen in Twin Peaks. She was featured a second time as the wife of an Ed Harris character in the movie Winter Passing, although she was only seen in a photograph on the wall. In spite of never appearing physically in the movie, she did receive full billing in the credits as the character "Mary". She appeared on the House episode "Simple Explanation" as Julia Kutner, adoptive mother of recently deceased fellow Lawrence Kutner.
She is married to cinematographer Caleb Deschanel, and is the mother of actresses Emily and Zooey Deschanel.
