Gordon was born in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Tyna E. Gordon, an elementary school teacher and civil rights activist, and Emmett A. Gordon, merchant marine and automobile laborer. She attended Oakenwald North Elementary School, William Shakespeare School (Ariel Elementary Community Academy) and graduated from Dunbar Vocational High School. As a child, Gordon read voraciously, attended martial arts classes and played basketball with President Barack Obama's Secretary of Education and former Chief Executive Officer of the Chicago Public Schools Arne Duncan, actor Michael Clarke Duncan, singer R.
