A native of California, he coached college football primarily in that state until he was hired as offensive coordinator by Oregon in 1989. From 1995 to March 2009, he was the head coach of the Oregon Ducks' football team. Bellotti was the dean of Pac-10 coaches and the fifth-longest tenured coach in major college football. On March 30, 2009 Bellotti officially left his head coach position to offensive coordinator Chip Kelly in order to take the school's athletic director position, which he officially assumed on July 1, 2009. Bellotti's accomplishments at Oregon include two Pac-10 Championships and an 11-1 season and #2 national ranking in 2001. In 2006, Bellotti became the Ducks' winningest football coach of all-time.
