Morning Joe began as a fill-in program in Don Imus' old slot. After Imus in the Morning was cancelled, former Florida Congressman Joe Scarborough, then the host of the nighttime MSNBC program Scarborough Country, suggested the idea of him doing a morning show instead. He put together what would become Morning Joe with Willie Geist and screenwriter John Ridley.
