Mr. Monk and the Other Detective is an episode of the USA Network series Monk. Harold Gumbal is killed after being forced to rob his own jewelry store. A security guard who witnesses the crime is also murdered by Gumbal's killers. Monk is called in to investigate, but Marty Eels (Jason Alexander), a second-rate gumshoe, (who compares himself to Philip Marlowe to Adrian Monk's Sherlock Holmes) appears on the scene and seems to be even more Monk-ish than Monk himself, finding seemingly impossible clues. Did he improve his game, or is he cheating? Monk thinks it's the latter, but Eels is on such a roll that Monk begins to doubt himself. Stottlemeyer even takes him off the case. Among the things Eels does -- which Monk would never do -- is taste the oil from the killers' vehicle and sniff the dog belonging to Gumbal. When they find Gumbal's body which Eels finds as a "result" of sniffing the oil he sees in the placement of the body the identification of one of the culprits. Gumbal... less
