Local tradition has it that the area was named after the Bell Labs location in Murray Hill, Manhattan and when the facilities moved to New Jersey in 1941, workers continued to refer to the "Murray Hill Bell Labs", giving the area a new name. In fact the old Bell Laboratories Building (Manhattan) was at 463 West Street in Greenwich Village (now WestBeth artists housing) miles away from Murray Hill Manhattan.
