It was co-founded in 1991 by Mark Skolnick and Nobel laureate Dr. Walter Gilbert. The company markets cancer predictive medicine products and develops therapeutics including drug candidates in the areas of Alzheimer's disease and cancer.
Myriad Genetics has been referred to as "probably the most hated diagnostics company" for its refusal to license its products to any other company. Lawyers at the ACLU serve as counsel for the plaintiffs in a lawsuit against Myriad Genetics. In the suit, medical associations, doctors, and patients are suing Myriad Genetics for its United States patents on genes related to breast cancer and ovarian cancer. The defendants' motions to dismiss were denied on November 1, 2009.
