Library holds 8.2 million volumes in its collection.
160,000 volumes were printed before 1801, and over 26,000 handwritings.
The National Library of Poland was created by a presidential decree of February 24, 1928, but its tradition dates back to the Załuski Library created in 18th century in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Its first director was Stefan Demby (1862–1939).
