Stevens attributes this to Mike Hurst, who had from his first album added orchestration with additional session musicians that Stevens felt left the album overproduced. Supporting Stevens' theory were a strained relationship with Hurst, who insisted on producing the album in the same manner, rather than the stripped down folk-rock sound that Stevens admired.
