(the regional chamber of commerce) had a population of 1.32 million.
The metropolitan area was hit by Hurricane Katrina—a Category 3 storm at landfall, though it had been at Category 5 a short time before—in August 2005, causing a decline in population from the 1.3 million recorded for the MSA alone in the 2000 Census.
