Born to Hong Kong actor Patrick Tse (謝賢) and Deborah Lee (狄波拉), Tse was raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He was educated at St. George's School, Vancouver, and later attended Hong Kong International School for one year before dropping out at grade 10. For a year he lived in Phoenix, Arizona before going back to Vancouver. He has dual Canadian and Hong Kong citizenship. He also has a younger sister named Jennifer Tse (謝婷婷).
Tse once had a relationship with fellow cantopop star Faye Wong. Faye Wong was 11 years Tse's senior and the news shocked Asia's entertainment industry.
