Nor Crystal Tears is a first contact novel about the meeting of the insect-like Thranx and humans written by Alan Dean Foster that started the Humanx Commonwealth. It is written from the perspective of the Thranx and the cultural lens through which they encounter "alien" humans. Nor Crystal Tears is a first contact novel about the meeting of the insect-like Thranx and humans written by Alan Dean Foster that started the Humanx Commonwealth. It is written from the perspective of the Thranx and the cultural lens through which they encounter "alien" humans. Foster would further expand on this theme, using another (unrelated) alien race, the furry Quozl in their eponymous novel. The Story stars one "Ryozenzuzex" (i.e. Ryo, of Family Zen, clan Zu, Hive Zex). Ryo was an odd number hatching (Thranx offspring almost always come in multiples of two) and was always a little odd. If someone asked Ryo, he would probably tell him that all his life there was a spark burning inside him, a thirst for knowledge. But when the thranx encounter a new spacefaring race who "Wore their skeletions inside" (humans) that spark turns into a roaring bonfire in Ryo. He NEEDS to know about these "monsters".
