Ishii's father, a martial artist and member of the military, tried to fight off their attackers, but was soon overpowered and stabbed by (unbeknownst to O-Ren) Bill; then, Boss Matsumoto himself dragged Ishii's mother to the bed and stabbed her as well, almost killing young Ishii as the katana's blade went through the mattress, nearly penetrating Ishii's head. After this, Bill burned down the house, and little Ishii barely escaped.
