Sharif was born Michel Demitri Shalhoub in Alexandria, Egypt to Lebanese Catholic parents Claire (née Saada) and Joseph Chalhoub. His father was a merchant of precious wood and had immigrated to Egypt from the Lebanese city of Zahle. Sharif recalled spending time in his childhood in his maternal grandparents' home in Tanta, Egypt. He was very attached to his grandmother, Abla Abdallah, who lived for more than 100 years.
