As a group, Patriots represented a wide array of social, economic, ethnic and racial backgrounds. They included lawyers like Alexander Hamilton; planters like Thomas Jefferson; merchants like Alexander McDougall; lawyers like John Adams; and plain farmers like Daniel Shays and Joseph Plumb Martin.
