He attended Texas A&M; University where he studied aerospace engineering. He earned a bachelor of science and a master of science. He was a member of the Corps of Cadets and had an Air Force Scholarship. He worked in military satellite operations in the Air Force following his university training.
After four years in the air force, he started work at Johnson Space Center. His work focused on development of space station assembly operations. His responsibilities soon expanded, eventually leading to his appointment as a flight director.
