Koretz grew up in what is now the 5th Council District of Los Angeles graduating from Hamilton High School. He earned a bachelor's degree in History from UCLA in 1979, where he was a founder of the "Bruin Democrats" . Koretz went on to serve on the Los Angeles County Democratic Committee for more than 10 years.
