Paul attended La Plata High School in La Plata, Maryland with Benji and Joel Madden, but was expelled after threatening to punch the principal in the face. Thomas has known the Madden twins since they were young children, and fellow Good Charlotte member Billy Martin since he joined the band in 1998.
Thomas plays five stringed Lakland basses. He has stars tattoed around his left calf, representing members of his family with his being outlined in blue.
During a performance at Brisbane, Australia on October 9, 2007, Thomas broke his ankle during the third song. Afterwards, bandmate Benji Madden played a couple of acoustic duets with his brother Joel. Once thought fit, he returned to the stage and continued to play, but stayed seated for the performance.
