Her father lives on a ranch in Spain and her mother works for the United Nations, helping with birth control in third-world countries. She has a sister, Rafaela (Rafa) born in 1982. After graduating from Saint Ann's School, she studied with Marcia Haufrecht at The Actors Studio.
De la Huerta has modeled in campaigns for Alberta Ferretti, Uniqlo, and Wolford. She appeared on the cover of the New York Times Sunday Magazine in October 2003. She has appeared on the cover of Trace magazine. She stars in the upcoming film Enter the Void, directed by Gaspar Noe.
Aside from acting, she is an artist who enjoys listening to punk rock music. She speaks French, Spanish and English fluently.
