The name Pentium was derived from the Greek pente (πέντε), meaning 'five', and the Latin ending -ium, a name selected after courts had disallowed trademarking of number-based names like "i586" or "80586". In 1995, Intel started to employ the registered Pentium trademark also for x86 processors with radically different microarchitectures (Pentium Pro / II / III / 4 / D / M).
