Peter Roger Shergold AC (born 27 September 1946) is an Australian academic and former public servant. Until February 2008, he was the Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C;), and as such was the nation's most senior public servant and a key adviser to the Prime Minister of Australia. Shergold earned a Bachelor of Arts (first-class) in politics and American studies from the University of Hull, and later a Master of Arts degree in American History from the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle and a Doctor of Philosophy from the London School of Economics. After moving to Australia, he became a lecturer in economics at the University of New South Wales in 1972. He was appointed as head of the university's economic history department in 1985.
