Past versions of its name are: Mramor, meaning "marbel", Petrevo selo, meaning "Peter's village", Petre, Petreven (Bulgarian: Мрамор, Петрево село, Петре, Петревен). During the Principality of Bulgaria after the end of the Ottoman rule (1878) and until 1908 it was called Petryovene and Petrovene (Bulgarian: Петрьовене, Петровене), still in use in local dialects.
