At around 11:00pm on September 23, 1916, Phoenix was nearly completely devestated by a fire that destroyed most of the business district, killing 1 person. The fire knocked out use of the fire fighting pumps that the village relied on. The fire lasted until early morning of the 24th.
On April 20, 2002, around 6:50 am, many residents of Phoenix were shaken awake by a magnitude 5.2 earthquake centered near Plattsburgh, NY. No damage or injuries were reported in the area.
The village is on the east side of the Oswego River and the Oswego Canal.
