Since the club’s first game in 1870, the club has won 34 SANFL premierships including six in a row and achieved the honour of being Champions of Australia on four occasions. From its foundation in 1870 to 1996, the club representing Port Adelaide competed in the SANFL as the "Port Adelaide Football Club". Over the years, it has had many nicknames, including: the Cockledivers, Seaside Men, Seasiders, Mudholians, Dustholians and Magentas, before finally settling on Magpies in 1902. In 1997 The Port Adelaide Football Club joined the Australian Football League (AFL). On entry, Port Adelaide adopted a new nickname, The "Power" and added two more colours (Silver and Teal) in a requirement to differentiate itself from existing AFL club Collingwood.
