The album was recorded at Music Box Studios in Los Angeles in March 1991, with Sonic Youth bassist Kim Gordon and Gumball frontman Don Fleming in charge of production. A month prior, in Fun City Studios in Los Angeles, Hole had also worked with Gordon and recorded "Drown Soda", an outtake which would later appear as the b-side on the Teenage Whore single. The studio work took only four days in total.
The album features a cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides, Now" (credited as "Clouds") and two noise suites, "Sassy" and "Starbelly" as well as an overall strong punk rock influence. The only single lifted from the album was Teenage Whore, which went into number 1 in the U.K. indie charts in late 1991.
