Princess Caroline was born in Hanover, Germany. Her father was The Hereditary Prince of Hanover, the eldest son of The Elector of Hanover. Her mother was Caroline of Ansbach, daughter of Johann Friedrich, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach. As a granddaughter of the Elector of Hanover, she was styled HSH Princess Caroline of Hanover at birth, rather than of Cambridge, the designation available to her through her father's British royal dukedom. Under the Act of Settlement 1701, she was 7th in the line of succession to the British throne. She was baptised, the day after her birth, at Herrenhausen Palace.
