This application was originally developed to support Apple's internal testing of QuickTime 1.0 and was then known as MoviePlayer. It was released as part of the QuickTime installation to provide a simple movie playback application for users. Over time the player grew in sophistication and scope. In 1999 as part of the release of QuickTime 4.0 it underwent a major user interface overhaul and became the first Apple application to use the Brushed Metal look.
