Mantooth, who is half Seminole, attended San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara, California. He graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts after high school. His role on Emergency! as John Gage first shot him to stardom in 1972, and he played the role from 1972 to 1979. Later, he found it difficult to sustain any long-term acting roles until he appeared as Clay Alden (later Alex Masters) on the soap opera Loving, which he played from 1987 to 1990 and from 1993 to 1995.
