The official announcement of the appointment was made on 14 December 1989, and Hnatyshyn's investiture as the 24th governor general since Confederation took place on 29 January 1990.
Hnatyshyn was born and educated in Saskatchewan and also served in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets prior to being elected to the House of Commons in 1974, where-after he served as a minister of the Crown in two non-successive governments until 1988.
