Cormier was baptized a Roman Catholic, and served as an altar boy for a time before being laid off. He later left the church at a young age for personal reasons. During the next years of his life, he described himself as "alive to the words: sex and drugs and rock and roll." He worked as a mining equipment salesman for Montreal's Dominion Engineering Works Ltd., where he earned $20,000 per year and had access to a company car and expense account.
