Barry was born in Hempstead, New York (on Long Island), the son of B. Constance Barry (née Barbara Duffy), an actress, and Raymond Barry, who worked in sales. His mother was born in New York City on April 29, 1913 and had a breakthrough role, after a career of small or cameo appearances in films, in 2001 (at age 88) in the film L.I.E.. In what was to become her last role, she played "Anne Harrigan", the mother of a Long Island pedophile (played by British actor Brian Cox). Barry, was a three letter athlete at Lynbrook High School, Long Island. He graduated from Brown University in 1962.
Before appearing in films he appeared in more than 75 plays.
