Her grandmother was child actress Eugenia Clinchard, and her father was the conservative radio and television commentator Wally George (born George Walter Pearch). De Mornay was raised by her English mother, Angela, and her stepfather, Peter De Mornay, and her surname was changed from Pearch to De Mornay in her childhood. She has one older brother, Jonathan De Mornay.
De Mornay grew up in France, England, and Austria. She attended the progressive Summerhill School in England and earned her high school degree summa cum laude from German-speaking St. Johann in Tirol in the Austrian Alps. She is fluent in German and French.
