Born of Chinese immigrant parents in Los Angeles, Richard attended its inner-city schools, served in the U.S. Navy, and graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in Philosophy. After a stint at Harvard Law School, Richard, inspired by the independent cinema of the 60's, left school to pursue a film career.
