Although blessed with great pace, Foster has drawn criticism for his lack of technical ability. He has, however, made significant progress during the 2007–2008 Season, impressing with a string of man-marking performances. Although naturally a right winger, Foster commonly played in the left back position when Aberdeen's first choice left back Richie Byrne was injured. For season 2008-09 he was given the number 3 shirt, previously worn by Byrne.
