"The Call of Ktulu" is named after the short story "The Call of Cthulhu," by American horror/science fiction author H. P. Lovecraft, whose works were also a direct influence on later Metallica songs, "The Thing That Should Not Be" and "All Nightmare Long." The original name of "The Call of Ktulu" as it appeared on the demos was "When Hell Freezes Over."
At the 2001 Grammy Awards, the version of "The Call of Ktulu" found on S&M; won for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
