The painting went through the possession of Paris dealer Ambroise Vollard, Cornelis Hoogendijk, Paul Rosenberg, Dr Albert C. Barnes, and the Carroll Carstairs Gallery. This painting was sold at Sotheby's, New York on 10 May 1999 for $60,502,500, a record price, during the soldout of the Whitney family collection. The painting was later resold at a loss.
