McCallum was born in Memphis, Tennessee, where his father, Robert D. McCallum, was a businessman . He was educated at Presbyterian Day School in Memphis and then at Choate Rosemary Hall, an exclusive school in Wallingford, Connecticut. He then went to Yale University, where he graduated in 1968. Among his friends at Yale was his near-exact contemporary and roommate, George W. Bush. He and Bush are fellow members of the influential Skull and Bones society.
