After graduating from the University of Maryland with a major in nursing, Quivers joined the United States Air Force in 1975, being promoted to the rank of Captain by 1978.
After three years in the Air Force, Quivers entered the radio industry in 1979, attending the Broadcasting Institute of Maryland. Within two years, she worked as a news and consumer reporter at stations in Carlisle and Harrisburg in Pennsylvania, before returning to Baltimore doing news with morning disc jockey Johnny Walker.
