Cartwright played college football at Kansas State University at the fullback position. He was drafted in the seventh round of the 2002 NFL Draft by the Redskins.
In his first season, Cartwright rushed three times for 22 yards and had 11 receptions for 121 yards. He also returned ten kicks for 169 yards.
In his second year, Cartwright was used much more. He rushed 107 times for 411 yards and had 18 receptions for 176 yards.
