The county was formerly a part of Kaufman County, but split off in 1873 because access to the county seat of Kaufman was inconvenient. The county and city are named for a wall-like subterranean rock formation that runs throughout the county.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 149 square miles (390 km), the smallest county in Texas, of which 129 square miles (330 km) is land and 20 square miles (52 km) is (13.39%) water.
Rockwall County was formed in 1873 from portions of Kaufman County. It was named after the city in the former county.
