Field was born in London, England, the son of Dr. Harry and Ingeborg Field (he is also related to Henry Winkler, known as Fonzie, a paternal cousin and Dr. Leo Baeck, his maternal grandmother's uncle). His father was the owner and managing director of Siegmund Robinow & Son Ltd, a company in London and Hamburg which at that time manufactured exclusive garments.
