Born on Earth in the 24th century he is abducted for four months while hiking in the Pinnacles. He wakes up on the trail with no memory of the experience. Returning to his car (whose parking fee had been pre-paid for the duration) he finds a tape recorded in his own voice advising him that four months are missing from his life. It also advises him that an annuity has been purchased for him on the condition that he make no effort to find his abductor, a mysterious unseen individual known only as "Vandervecken".
Originally planning to take the annuity as hush money, he soon finds out that he has inherited a sizable amount of money from a wealthy relative. Forgoing the annuity he no longer needs, he begins to track Vandervecken, and comes to believe that the latter is actually Jack Brennan, the human turned Protector who disappeared over 200 years ago.
