Turner moved to Handsworth, Birmingham, England when she was nine years old, in 1967. In the early 1980s Turner got to work with Alexis Korner. In 1983, she had appeared on records with UB40. Her major break came in 1986, when she provided backing vocals on Culture Club's From Luxury to Heartache album, and a solo recording contract with Jive Records followed.
